I WANT THE SUN (by Kathban Evren) June 5, 2009

It is a hot, sunny day . Ali and his mother are in the kitchen. Ali is playing with his toy train. His mother is washing the dishes. Ali is a curious boy. He asks his mother a lot of questions. His mother answers the questions patiently.

“Mommy! I can see the sun now. But why can’t I see it at night?” Ali asks his mother.

“Where does it go at night?”

“The sun goes to the other side of the world at night,” his mother answers.

“But I want the sun to stay with us,”says Ali. “ Please mom! Tell it not to go.”

There is a smile on Ali’s mother’s face.

“OK. My dear son. I will tell the sun not to leave us,” Ali’s mother says.

“Thank you mom. I love you. I like the sun,”  Ali says happily.

After some time, Ali changes his mind and comes to his mother.

“Mom! Don’t tell the sun anything. I will talk with the sun myself,” Ali says.

“Good idea. You talk to it,” his mother replies.

The next morning, Ali is vey excited. Because he is going to speak to the sun.

He is having breakfast in the kitchen. The sun is shining in the sky. Ali finishes his breakfast and runs to the balcony because he can see the sun very well on the balcony. Ali is very close to the sun now.

“Hello sun!” Ali greets the sun. “You are very bright as usual. I like you. Please don’t leave me, don’t go anywhere at night.”

The sun doesn’t say anything, but it seems very happy with Ali’s words.  “Mom! It is all right.  The sun will stay with us. It won’t go anywhere,” Ali tells his mother. Ali’s mother is smiling at Ali.

“Look my sweet boy. There are a lot of children on the other side of the world,”explains Ali’s mother. “It is night there. The children are sleeping now because the sun is with us. When it is night here, the sun is visiting the other children. They like the sun, too.”

“You are right mom. I must share everything with my friends,” Ali says. “I must share my toy train, and the sun. All the children are my friends. The sun is my friend, too.”

Ali runs to the balcony.

“Hey sun!” he calls out to the sun. “You shouldn’t stay with us at night. Visit my friends on the other side of the world. Give my greetings to them. I like you and my friends like you too.”

MAGIC WATER (Zeynep Şule Evren, 5-C, Çınar Koleji) March 26, 2009

Hello, my name is Zeynep. I am going to tell you a story. I was living in a city. One day I was doing my homework.  I was thirsty, so I went to the kitchen. I drank water. I felt strange. Then what happened do you know? I found myself in America. But I did not know why?

In America I saw someone. Then I learned that her name was Ayşe. She tried to help me. We went to a park. We played games together. We were very thirsty. We went to Ayşe’s home. We sat on something green and round like a chair. Then she brought me a glass of water and buumm….. I found myself in Egypt.

In Egypt someone called Maruf took me somewhere. His skin was a little brown. “Let’s play water game,” he said. I didn’t want to play because I knew that I was going to go to another country. But he didn’t listen to me. He came and splashed water over me. I was wet, angry and tired. Then I went to Spain.

I was in Spain because of Maruf. I missed my mother very much. There was a king named Berkan. He caught me and put me in the dungeon. They gave me a little food and a glass of water. I didn’t want to drink it but the king wanted to see me drinking it. But I didn’t know why. I drank it and found myself in England.

There was a big war. I had to drink water or I would die. Because in the war, they would kill me. I was searching for a glass of water, but I couldn’t find. Then someone named Ahmet came and said, “This water is dirty. We can’t use it, so I’m putting it here.” I did not want to drink it but I had no other choice. I drank it and buumm… I was in France.

There were two ugly women named Feyza Nur and Sena Nur in France. They wanted to make me their slave. I didn’t want to be their slave. But they forced me. They gave me water and I drank it immediately. I heard a sound….

“Zeynep, wake up! We are going to have dinner,” my mum said. I woke up. I didn’t understand where I was. Then I understood that all of those things were a dream. Or should I say it was a nightmare? That was a strange dream and I thought that I went to 200 years forward in the future. Because the year is 1809 now. But in the dream it was 2009.  In Ayşe’s home, there was something I saw. That thing was a computer. 200 years later, there is going to be a computer, I think.

Introductory Stories- 4 March 11, 2009

Ann Grimes had a small car, and she drove a lot in town, because she went to work by car every morning and came home by car too, and she did her shopping with her car on Saturdays.

But she very seldom went out into the country in it, because she did not have much time.

Then one Saturday morning last August she said to herself,

‘It’s a beautiful day, and its’s hot in town. I’m going to drive out in to the country, and have a picnic in a quiet field there.’

She drove twenty kilometres, and then she came to a small country road. She looked at it and said to herself,

‘This road is very steep, isn’t it?’ She stopped in front of a house and asked a man, ‘Is this road dangerous?’

‘No,’ the man answered, ‘It isn’t dangerous up here. They always crash down at the bottom.’

Peter was ten, and his sister Jane was eight. They lived in the country 10 kilometres rom Cardiff.

One day they saw a picture of a circus in the newspaper, and Jane said to her mother, ‘There’s going to be a circus in Cardiff next week. Please take us there.’

The children’s mother bought tickets, and on Saturday evening Peter and Jane and their parents went to the circus

The tent was full of people, and after a quarter of an hour, the circus began.

A beautiful young girl came in. She put a cake in her mouth, and then a big lion came and took the cake out of her mouth

A man in a red coat shouted to the people, ‘Who’s going to do the same for 100 pounds?’

Nobody answered. But then a funny man stood up and said, ‘All right… but first take the lion away!’

A selfish fox once invited a stork to dinner at his home in a hollow tree. That evening, the stork flew to the fox’s home and knocked on the door with her long beak. The fox opened the door and said, “Please come in and share my food.”The stork was invited to sit down at the table. She was very hungry and the food smelled delicious! The fox served soup in shallow bowls and he licked up all his soup very quickly. However, the stork could not have any of it as the bowl was too shallow for her long beak. The poor stork just smiled politely and stayed hungry. The selfish fox asked, “Stork, why haven’t you taken your soup? Don’t you like it?”

The stork replied, “It was very kind of you to invite me for dinner. Tomorrow evening, please join me for dinner at my home.”

The next day, when the fox arrived at the stork’s home, he saw that they were also having soup for dinner. This time the soup was served in tall jugs. The stork drank the soup easily but the fox could not reach inside the tall jug. This time it was his turn to go hungry.

MORAL: A selfish act can backfire on you.

Mary worked in a office in London, and she usually went out and had lunch in a restaurant. She liked foreign food and often looked in a newspaper for the names of the new restaurants, because she enjoyed going to them and eating new things. Sometimes she said ‘ I don’t like this restaurant. I’m not going to come here again.’; but often she said, ‘I like this one. I’m going to have my lunch here often.’

One day she saw the name of a new Greek restaurant in her newspaper, and she went there for lunch. It was very small but it was clean and nice, and the food was good.

But then Marry found something hard in her mouth. She took it out. It was a button.

‘Look here, waiter!’she said. ‘I’ve found this button in my food.’

‘Thank you, thank you!’ the waiter answered happily. ‘I looked everywhere for it.’

Mrs. Jones wanted a picture for her living-room. She took the bus and went to town. She looked for a picture shop, and after a few minutes she found one. There were some pictures in the window, but she did not like them very much.

She went into the shop and looked at some other pictures. She liked some of those more. There was a picture of a young girl and Mrs. Jones liked it very much. She went to the shopkeeper and said, ‘How much do you want for this picture?’

The shopkeeper turned the picture round. He looked at the back of it and said, ‘Thirteen pounds.’

‘Thirty pounds?’ Mrs. Jones said. ‘That’s very expensive. I’m going to offer you twenty pounds for it.’

‘I said “Thirteen pounds”, not “Thirty pounds”,’ the man answered.

‘Thirteen?’ Mrs. Jones said. ‘Then I’m going to offer you nine pounds for it.’
